This calculator tool will help you find out the time it takes to charge lead acid batteries, lithium phosphate batteries and lithium ion batteries in your home.
In today’s time, the use of lead acid batteries is decreasing and lithium phosphate batteries are being used in things like inverters and these get charged much faster than lead acid batteries, due to which you can use them easily and quickly. While a lead acid battery takes up to 10 hours to be fully charged, a lithium phosphate and lithium ion battery can be charged in as little as around 3 hours.

Types of 12 Volt Batteries in the Market

There are three main types of 12V batteries commonly available:

  1. Lead-Acid Batteries
    These are the most widely used and are available in three subtypes:
    • Flooded (Wet Cell)
    • AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat)
    • Gel Cell
    All three types charge differently, and each has its own characteristics and applications.

Flooded Lead-Acid Battery Types

Flooded batteries further come in two main categories:

  1. Normal Flooded Battery
  2. Solar Flooded Battery

Key Differences Between Normal and Solar Flooded Batteries:

  • Charging Current:
    • Normal battery typically charges at 10A.
    • Solar battery is designed to handle higher current and can charge at 20A or more.
  • Charging Time (for 150Ah battery):
    • Normal battery: Around 10 hours to fully charge.
    • Solar battery: Can be fully charged in about 5 hours due to higher charge acceptance.

Charging Stages of Lead-Acid Batteries with Solar Charge Controller

When connected to a solar charge controller, lead-acid batteries follow a 3-stage charging process:

  1. Bulk Charging
    • Maximum current is supplied until the battery voltage reaches the set limit.
  2. Absorption Charging
    • Voltage is maintained while the current slowly reduces, allowing the battery to reach full capacity.
  3. Float Charging
    • Maintains a constant voltage to prevent overcharging and keep the battery at 100% without losing charge.

Lithium-Ion 12V Batteries

  • Charging Capacity:
    Lithium-ion batteries have the highest charge acceptance rate among all 12V battery types.
  • Efficiency & Speed:
    They can charge much faster compared to lead-acid batteries and are highly efficient with minimal energy loss.
  • Charging Control:
    Require a Battery Management System (BMS) to safely manage charge and discharge cycles.
